How can I search for old e-mails in Gmail?

I'm looking for an e-mail in Gmail with the keyword "Bob" from at least three or four months ago. I know it's somewhere in the Trash folder so I search via the search box, but nothing comes up. Does the Search option only work for e-mails assigned labels?
